The most common parts we sell by appliance

At our walk-up parts counter we sell all sorts of parts, but some are more common than others. We keep track of what goes fast so we can try to have the most common parts on hand for our DIY customers. So what are the most common parts we sell? Read on to find out!

1. Ovens/ranges

   For ovens and freestanding ranges the most common part we see by far is elements. Many times people will bring in the old bake element. Usually there's an obvious break somewhere, but occasionally it will look good on the outside, but fail during testing. We also see infinite switches and surface elements occasionally, but we have the largest selection of bake and broil elements.

2. Dryers

   With dryers, much like ranges, the element is the most common part we sell. There are also usually several fuses on dryers that may fail when the element does, depending on how it failed, but the element is always a good place to start. The reason elements are so common is because they cycle on and off throughout the cycle. Heating and cooling, expanding and contracting puts wear on the part over time. Many times you don't need a new dryer, just a new element and you're back up and running. We also sell belts, rollers, and pulleys fairly frequently. These parts usually will also come as a kit so you can replace them all at the same time for routine maintenance. If you've got a squeaky dryer, it may be time for one of the kits.

3. Washers

   Washers are a bit less predictable than dryers. There's quite a few more parts, but some of the more common ones we see are valves, belts, control boards, and lid locks. In most of Tennessee we have hard water due to limestone deposits which can degrade valves over time and cause them to fail. Belts can stretch and wear out and lid locks can degrade with normal use. Control boards also fail from time to time, but I would recommend having a certified technician to replace a control, as many have to be calibrated or programmed.

4. Refrigerators

   Water filters are by far the most common part we sell for refrigerators since they should be changed every 6 months. We also see inlet valves that can wear out over time and, just like washer valves, hard water does them no favors. We also frequently sell lightbulbs and air filters. Air filters should also be changed routinely, just like the water filter. Your owner's manual should have recommendations for how frequently to replace filters if you aren't sure.

5. Dishwashers

   For dishwashers, there's a couple of parts we see fairly frequently, but rollers, spray arms, and cleaning products are most common. Rollers will also wear out over time and make the racks either hard to remove or sag if it's an upper rack. We carry several of the most common rollers and rack adjuster kits in stock as well as cleaning tablets.

6. Microwaves

   For microwaves, the most common thing we see are light bulbs and grease filters. I've seen a lot of LED replacement bulbs online for microwaves, but many of these will not work if the microwave takes an incandescent bulb, and may actually damage the control board. One thing that's important to remember is when replacing a microwave light bulb: You need to unplug the unit before uninstalling the old bulb and reinstalling the new one.

7. Ice machines

   While we carry several parts for ice machines in our warehouse, we typically do not sell many over the counter. This is probably because they are difficult to work on if you aren't experienced in how they operate. We do sell nickel safe ice machine cleaner. Most people don't realize that the metal inside ice machines is made of nickel because it is non ferrous and does not rust, but it takes a special cleaner to keep the inside looking fresh.

While we obviously can't stock every part ever made, we do try to look ahead, notice trends, and have common items on hand so your machine can get back in operation quickly.
